PREFACE
We are pleased to publish the Proceedings of the short course on ‘Energy Efficiency’ organized by the Centre for Energy Studies (CES) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and German Technical Cooperation (GTZ). Energy has been the primary input behind the evolution of the human civilization up to the new millennium marked with astounding technological developments. However, while the demand for energy is ever escalating the commercially viable and exploitable resources for bulk energy are getting shrunk in the world. Therefore, alongside ensuring access to energy for all, affordable and pragmatic technical means need to be devised and implemented so that energy can be saved through reducing the consumption. This proceedings focuses through a number of articles contributed by the noted experts in respective fields that energy saving and auditing i.e. conservation is an interdisciplinary topic that requires integration of architectural, mechanical and electrical engineering solutions on one side and the financial analysis on the other side. The articles illustrate how energy saving can be affected through the architecture, lighting, motors and transformers, ventilation and air conditioning, heating systems and cogeneration in residential or industrial and commercial buildings/plants. We take this opportunity to acknowledge our profound gratitude to Prof. Dr. A. M. M. Safiullah, the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of BUET, all the resource persons, Mr. Erich Otto Gomm, of GTZ and Mr. Mohammad Zahirul Islam, Librarian of BUET for their contributions towards the publication of this proceedings. The last but not the least, our special appreciation goes to Mr. Md. Abdur Rab of CES for his untiring efforts for publishing this Proceedings.
