GIS (Geographic Information System) Based RET Mapping SRE has successfully completed number of solar PV installations demonstrating diversified application of the technology. Among these, solar electrification in rural markets, cluster village like Cluster village, UP complex holds potential for immediate replication. In this process, one of key issues to facilitate in formulation of programmes/projects is to determine the needs assessment of the country. GIS technology offers an exciting potential in identifying locations of markets, Asrayon, UP complex in off-grid areas along with the demands. In this context, Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) is one of the leading organizations in the public sector in Bangladesh which is continuously striving for improved management of geographic information needed for its activities. With the prime mandate to provide technical support to the local bodies for planning and implementation of development programmes, LGED has started to prepare planning maps with local level information of rural infrastructure in the early 80’s. It has established a GIS set-up in its headquarter in early nineties with a view to facilitate development of nationwide spatial database for rural infrastructure and to enhance institutional capability for planning and monitoring of rural development programmes in Bangladesh. LGED being a decentralized organization, has strong field capacity for carrying out Differential GPS survey for speedy acquisition of high precision geographic data and, for carrying out ground truthing operation to improve the quality of data. With financial assistance from USAID, LGED has already completed DGPS survey in rural road network in 263 Thanas. In pursuit of establishing local government database, GIS unit have developed number of GIS based planning tools to be used by the decision makers at the local level. In the preview of above, preparing of GIS based database and off-grid Map identifying Growth centre, Union parishad complex and Cluster villages has been started in collaboration with GIS unit of LGED. Since GIS unit, LGED have done similar work with UNICEF and other institutes like Election Commission. Renewable energy database will be developed in the same fashion following existing rules and practices in LGED. |
