The UNDP Millennium Project, led by UNDP Headquarters, had developed costing templates based on which an Energy Costing Tool was developed by UNDP Regional Centre in Bangkok under its Regional Energy Programme for Poverty Reduction (REP-PoR) in Asia-Pacific. In this respect, a four-country Energy Costing Tool initiation exercise was held on August 2008 at UNDP Conference Room, IDB Bhaban, Agargaon, Dhaka. The exercise led to the development of a modified tool in the country context through an interactive process by the Bangladesh team comprising representatives from MPEMR, PDB, REB, LGED & Planning Commission. The Bangladesh team led by Mr. Mir Tanweer Husain, Project Manager, Sustainable Rural Energy, Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) got the First Prize for the exercise in competition with Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
A follow-up event was organized on 20 November 2008 to present the costing tool to the planners and policymakers and handover prizes to the Bangladesh Team who won the award. Professor Dr. M. Tamim, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor was present as the Chief Guest of the event along with Dr. Nandita Mongia, Regional Energy Programme Advisor/Coordinator, Regional Centre, Bangkok as the Special Guest.
